Go to your primary care doctor. She will ask you a laundry list of questions and do a basic physical. Nothing extraordinary. To get a diagnosis of ADHD (ADD), you need to meet many, many criteria.

Many patients are diagnosed with ADD, when, in fact, they do not meet the criteria. True adult ADD is relatively rare, both in the literature and in my experience. Remember, to have adult ADD, you almost always need a diagnosis of ADD when you where a kid. Your doctor will be able to help.

There are other things that may "act" like ADD, which is why it is important to see your doctor. Ritalin is a serious, serious drug with many side effects and a very high potential for addiction. The diagnosis may also affect your insurance or interfere with your ability to get certain jobs, so be sure that the diagnosis is absolutely correct before beginning the drug. There are other medications that work, too.

Best of luck.

I did that at 20. You have to contact psychiatrists or learning/educational testing centers and ask if they test for ADD. Even if they're geared towards children they still have the expertise to test for adult ADD (which is the same tests they do for high school kids) and usually will if you ask.

BUT you have to pay... Usually $500+. Not cheap... But no one responsible will give you Ritalin without a diagnosis.

The only way to get it for free is if your family doctor knows you really well and is willing to give it to you. If you ask for Strattera instead of one of the stimulants (like Ritalin) you'll have more luck, because Strattera can't be abused. Drug abuse is the reason it's so hard to get Ritalin.

Sorry but this is a foolish question. The idea is to go find out what's wrong and then decide what to do about it. We are a very spoiled -- dare I say ruined? -- country when we think that pills are the answer to personal issues of character. This is an addiction, no more and no less. This stuff about "chemical imbalance" is a delusion and a farce. You'll see. There are much better ways, drug-free, and they are safer and take less work than the pills which rob you of your personalitly and potential. Do your best.

You should have a full workup by your doctor. Ritalin might not be what will work for you. He may recommend something else or even just have behavioral helps that you can use instead.

I figure that I have had ADD all my life but have adapted habits that make me able to function, because they never knew about it when I was a kid.

My husband was diagnosed at about that age. He went through a very lengthy diagnostic process with a counselor who specialized in adult ADHD. It is very different to treat than childhood ADHD. Then he went to a psychiatrist for medication.

Its called Ritalin and you need to see your regular doctor, who would probably refer you to a psychiatrist for an evaluation. They then would determine what is best for you.

Oh Jeez!!!!
Some Teacher suggested that my Son needed that Crap and I told them Forget it!!! WHAT THE H!!! is ADD??
All he needed was more outside play, more physical activities and more brain stimulus!! I was right!! With his increased outside activities (video games gone), ROTC boot camp (he loved it) and Soccer Camp (again, he loved it)!
He is a changed child (without the Stupid Drugs)!
Why does everybody think they need some ......
never mind, I will ask it as a Question. See you there.
