For me, I had to build up slowly. I started with 10 pushups a day in January, 20 a day in February, and now 30 a day in March. I will move up to 40 a day in April and increase by ten every month. I am starting to notice a difference in my arms, but it takes me longer because I have a smaller muscles mass.

I do 6 sets of 40, its a pretty good workout, but really the amount of pushups that are good for you depends upon how many pushups you can do. Start off with 5 sets of 10 then if its too easy or you dont feel sore the next day move up to 5 sets of 20.

pushups work ok but to really get the results you want try Towel Bench. Take a bunch of towels and wrap them up and ducktape them. Put the towels on your chest and benchpress about 20 percent more then your MAX lift. The bar won't go down that far because of the towels but your body will get used to the weight REAL quick and you will see MAJOR gains fast. To get gains you have to work with HEAVIER weights. Push your body and it will grow.

don't ever go for fast result, you will end up using to much wieght, and doing everything wrong.. take your time and the results will last way longer...
but if you are really looking for the quick fix:
start out with fifty and go up another five every two days for a week. then stick with that amount for a week, then the next week, go up 1 everyday.

As many as you can before you can't do anymore. I'd break it into sections, like 5 sets of 5, and gradually move up. Do this everyday and you'll see results in about 3 months.

You can do as many pushups as you want and still get no results. Remember the body shapes better when you follow a balanced diet and combine different exercises such as cardio, chest, legs, arms, etc...
