No, Vargas is not the family name of the Spanish Royal Family.

The current royal family of Spain are the Bourbons (descendant from the Bourbons of France), who have been on the throne since 1700 - with a few exceptions during Napolenic times, Franco, etc.

Before the Bourbons, Spain was ruled by the Austrian Hapsburgs (from 1516).

Before the Hapsburgs, you had the joint monarchs of Ferdinand and Isabella, who were the first rulers of a nominally united Spain (from 1479).

I am sure there were/are Spanish nobles with the surname Vargas, but as another poster discusses, you may or may not be of any relation to them, you would actually have to trace your genealogy to determine this.

the first problem is that not all people of one name will be related. So.. immediately when someone says "all Vargas are...", it really raises a red flag of being unreliable.
It's part of genealogy 101, beginner's class.. that you start research with family information.... but reality is that MUCH of the time, it will prove to be just as you say- rumors.
Even if there were SOME royal or noble Vargas persons, you will not be certain that you are related, unless you take the time to research AND carefully document your own lineage, step by step.
Everyone wants to do it fast easy and cheap. But, it just doesn't work. Not to mention that you miss the real fun, which is knowing who YOU are.

The current Spanish royal family are members of the Borbon dynasty - they're related to the former French royal family that was overthrown in 1789.
