A small zoo had just mammals and birds. When asked how many of each they had, the zoo keeper said he had a total of 54 animals with a 140 feet total between them all. Assuming all the animals had all the feet they should have, how many birds and how many mammals were there?

Not that there are many, but.

Possibly the only mammals other than humans that commonly move bipedally by an alternating gait rather than hopping are gibbons when on the ground, and giant pangolins.

So, go with the four legged ones. Thank you! Hoppers don't count either.

This is a trick question. Everyone is saying 16 mammals and 38 birds, but there Could be 18 mammals and 36 birds.

Need to know what types of animals....some mammals walk on 4 legs and some walk on 2.....

Assuming they walk on all 4 you would have 16 mammals (64 feet) and 38 birds (76 feet)

16+38= 54

this can be easily solved by algebra
suppose a is no. of mammels and b is birds
so a+b=54
a=54 -b
&
4*a+2*b=140
substituting the value of a
4*[54 - b]+2b= 140
216 -4b +2b =140
-4b +2b = -216+140
-2b = -76
b = 38
a 54-38= 16
so there are 16 mammels and 38 birds
b=76/4 =19
there are 19 birds and 35 mammels

That depends on whether the mammals are bipedal or quadripeds.
