A combination of both...

Some have completed their tours of duty but are being kept in Iraq because of a rarely used clause in military contracts that allows them to keep you durng wartime past your expiration date. It's called a backdoor draft.

Some, especially Reservists, were just attending monthly drills while attending college or for extra cash then got thrown into the war. Many Reservists when asked will tell you they never wanted nor desired to be in the military full-time, much less, participate in a war.

Some, the ones that joined after the war started mostly, volunteered to fight in Iraq.

The American army is an all-volunteer force so in a way they are choosing to serve in Iraq by signing up for the army.

On the other hand, some soldiers may be personally against the war, but they're respectable people who follow orders even if they disagree with them.

Ok, the military is a voluntary force, there's no secret clauses or any of the BS I've been reading here, its all there in black & white, so if you don't understand what your getting yourself into, you shouldn't be signing on the dotted line or raiseing your hand to take the oath. And for those who don't know, you can be recalled into the military even after your enlistment is up and your back on the block. Yes, certain conditions need to be met but its there just the same. Forced to fight? Are firemen forced to run into burning buildings?

It goes with the uniform.
Hazard of the profession.
If you don't like the thought of the possibility of doing it. Don't sign up.
Something about "I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and those appointed over me" and "Defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic"and "bare true faith and allegiance to the same".
By the way those that DO NOT want to not keep their obligation.
Can win an all expense paid trip to the "Crossbar Hotel" and a felony conviction for AWOL (Absent with-out Leave) OR Desertion.

EITHER WAY YOU LOOK AT THEY VOLUNTEERED BECAUSE THEY ALL WALKED INTO Ye' OLD RECRUITING OFFICE AND ASKED, "WHERE DO I SIGN UP?"

I see too much stupidity here. The military is voluntary. Unless you are a complete idiot you know that the odds of you being deployed are very great. Too many people who have no understanding of anything will say "they volunteered to join, but were forced to go." What is the purpose of the military? Quick lesson: to win wars. And before one more retard spouts off, while in basic you are given several opportunities to leave.

The American military is a volunteer force.

To all those who believe that stop-loss extends a service member beyond their contract you are incorrect.
Almost every contract has inactive reserve time at the end. Those who are stop-lossed are just kept on active duty during a part or all of that time, it's part of their original contractual obligation. Also, once a service member retires they are transferred to the retired reserve and may be recalled to active duty until the age of 60.

They volunteered for the military. The military sends them wherever they want to go. "Forced" is a bit harsh, since they knew being sent to Iraq was a very high probability when they voluntarily enlisted.

So far we are only using volunteer troops.

If they were being forced a draft would be in effect.

As it stands there are still young men and women signing up to fight this terrible war.

Originally they volunteered, but I do not think anyone ever expected the U.S.A. to get involved ina the shameful mess we have helped to create in Iraq. At this point, I suspect many soldiers are going only because they have to.

Sad situation, for our soliders, our country, the people of Iraq.....

It doesn't matter what civilians tend to try to believe, but the majority of those in the military feel that they will defend their country when asked. They do not want to go into danger away from their loved ones, but because they believe in what is America they volunteer and dedicate their LIVES to this country. Would you? It has nothing to do with volunteering to fight in one event.
