Skype is great for most people, better than mobile or landline. That's because traditional phones clip off the high and low notes, but Skype includes them for DVD or music quality audio. Skype's sound quality is so good that hundreds of radio and podcast engineers use it to record interviews over the Internet.

Three things affect sound quality:

Your microphone. Headsets put good sound into your computer. You only sound as good as your headset.

Your bandwidth. You might want to turn off big downloads or file sharing during your Skype call. Leave your pipes open for Skype. Skype does work on dial-up, but broadband makes all the difference.

Your computer. Skype needs a little processing power and memory. If your Outlook or browser uses up your CPU and RAM, you might want to turn them off when talking on Skype.

As for other internet phones, most have pretty good sound quality; you'll have to try them out and see.

I used Skype when it first came out, when it was free. I had no problems with it except every once and a while I would get a delay. But I was calling from Iraq to the US so that might have been why there was a couple second delay sometimes. It is a great service though.
