Do you think I was born again by silly-section instead?

Most are a bit scared. They may realize that they've just been saved from dying forever (which is much worse than just being dead forever -- dying's painful!), so they are a bit afraid to let themselves laugh or be funny.

Plus, most of what is the only way this world knows how to be funny is really offensive to many people (naturally, not always the same people, and not the ones who think it's funny or they wouldn't think it was funny), so many new Christians are worried about what being funny will mean.

Now God, on the other hand, is funny all the time, and always was. (Ever reviewed some of the list of Australian marsupials?) Stories like John 9 (the ex-blind guy making fools of the religious leaders), or certain Proverbs (like the one about what happens if you greet your neighbor too loudly too early in the morning) are very funny.

No, God's got a great sense of humor.

(Humor forceps? Is that supposed to be funny?)

You obviously don't hang around with the same set of Christians that I do. We've had pun wars that will go on for an hour or more, and some of the funniest jokes I've ever heard were told by Christians.

For example, this is one of my favorites:

A priest, a rabbi, and an atheist were all out fishing one afternoon. After an hour or so, the priest stands up, yawns, and says, "I'm going to go get a cup of coffee from that little bait and tackle place over there. Be right back."

He steps out of the boat and walks across the lake. A few minutes later, he walks back over the water and climbs into the boat with his coffee.

The sight of him drinking the coffee makes the rabbi squirm a little, and he, too, stands up. "I've got to use the rest room, guys. I'll be back in a little bit."

Same story: he climbs out of the boat and trots across the water to the bait and tackle shop. A little while later, he returns and gets back into the boat.

Not to be outdone by his religious companions, the atheist stands up, stretches, and says, "I could use a sandwich. I'l see you two in a few minutes."

He steps out of the boat. . .and sinks like an anchor to the bottom. As bubbles break the surface of the water, the priest looks at the rabbi and shrugs his shoulders.

"I guess we really should have told him where the rocks were."

I get mad props, because I have a great sense of humor. I have been a Christian for 10 years. God does not have forceps, I think that Christians sometimes forget that we are allowed to enjoy life. In my experience people who are not believers have come to me and said are you suppose to be doing that, saying that, or be here. I just remind them and myself, that I have God's permission to enjoy this world after all He created this world for me to enjoy. I refuse to let the enemy of this world take away my joy, laughter, happiness, or sense of HUMOR!

In order to be born again the mind needs to devolve. With no mind (or very little), nothing makes sense except the robotic need to talk about God. I work in mental health and this often happens to psychotics (I don't just mean the dangerous ones - psychosis comes in many forms). I wonder sometimes if it's more than genetics, drugs, and horrific abuse that cause these episodes. I believe ignorance is a factor too, although it falls into the abuse realm at times. So many people beat religion into their children and then condemn those who quite literally, go crazy from it, if only for a short period of time.

Gee, Chekhov was CUTE! He looks like a Star Trek character, though. Anton Shatner. Captain Anton Kirk.

What they don't understand or need time to make adjustments. It's like a spiritual battle within. They want to do what's right, but they don't have to give up all who they are, even God has a sense of humor, you just have to pick the humor for you, of good taste, of good virtues:)

It's not that we lose their sense of humor, we do still have one, hello! But vulgar, stupid jokes, and jokes at the expense of others are not really smiled upon by God, and a a good christian should want to please and serve their Savior by not partaking in these kinds of jokes.

Hey if your god killed people for laughing (like little kids who laugh at bald heads) And got angry with people like sarah who laughed when she found out she was going to be pregnant at age 90, you'd lose your sense of humor quickly too!

I have considered asking this. Seriously, does religion tend to crowd out the humor ganglia or something?

I guess some folks should be fitted with a sign that says "Warning Humor Impaired"

It could have been the Alum colonic they got as children.

Because nowhere in the NT and rarely in the OT does anyone laugh for fun. They are laughed at, they laugh at their enemies, they even (in the case of Abraham and Sarah) laugh at god, but they never seem to enjoy life.

How much better it is to focus on the Laughing Buddha rather than the crucifix.
