Most large breeds of dog are home friendly. I think its a remnant of their original purpose. Most dogs bred to hunt large game were required to be good on the job but laidback, out of the way and friendly when at home. A large dog that was too difficult at home would have been a problem, so more easy going dogs would have been required.

It depends on what personality you want in a dog. There are active dogs who need a daily 30 min walk or jog with you (Golden Retrievers, Labs, Greyhounds). Then there are the lap dogs, but I wouldn't recommend them, they can be destructive (I have a Pomeranian). Then there are the super large dogs that pretty much lay around all day (Saint Bernards, Great Danes). There are also dogs that do really well with children (Great Pyrenees, Golden Retrievers, Shetland Sheepdogs).

It all depends on how much time and attention you plan on giving your dog. If the dog is an active dog or a toy, they will go nuts if you leave them alone all day and all night. If you want a dog to take everywhere with you, super large dogs will simply sit there and laugh at you for trying to cart them around.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

By far, one of the most family friendly and child friendly large breed dog is the Old English Sheepdog. They are friendly and loyal, easy to train and love children. My sheepdog will actually babysit if there is a child around. Kind of like its gaurding them. They can pull her fur, try to ride her and she will not make a noise, the occasional lick usually puts a stop to the childrens antics. These dogs are so good natured and need alot of attention in return though. They love their family and become extremely attached so these are "keep forever" part of the family.

Great Danes. English Mastiffs. St.Bernards. Great Pyreneses. Newfoundlands. Old English Sheepdogs. Irish Wolfhounds. I'm assuming you mean "good with kids, right?" but if you mean they won't destroy your house, you might consider a small dog or an older large dog and not a puppy. With large dogs, be prepared to pick up piles of what looks like horse manure! I recommend these breeds to people with lots of fenced in property and when they come into the house, give them a special room that is free of valuables and has older, worn furniture that you don't care about. Good luck!

Are Labs largedogs? I've got two lab mixes and they are great. Very smart, obedient, empathetic and awesome with kids. Is that what you mean by home friendly - cuz I don't know a dog breed large or small that won't chew something up every now and then or at least barf on your bed once ;-).

Greyhounds are admirable pets for almost every house.
You may need to verify that your particular dog is
cat friendly if you happen to have cats around as well.

You should let 'em run at least 3 times a week, but
they are basically very lazy, and I know of lots of people
who just walk them.

Loving, warm, quiet ... and not very bright.

You might check out your local "Greyhound friends"
organization - they rescue does from the race tracks
that would ordinarily be euthanized.

It just depends on what qualities you want in a dog, pick a few breeds and read up on them online. English Bulldogs tend to be lazy if you desire low maintenance, so do the Mastiff breeds. I have a Bullmastiff and he is very loving and requires little exercise, he's pretty laid back.

It depends on what you consider large. Dogs like golden retrievers are considered a large breed, but they are nothing compared to say...the saint bernard. Golden retrievers are DEFINITELY a GREAT dog to have. They aren't aggressive and are very loyal to their owner. As far as a dog the size of a saint bernard, they are good, and great danes are good.
