It appears to be the desecration of a rebuilt Jewish temple by Antichrist who "takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God" (II Thessalonians 2:4), and which was prophesied by the Prophet Daniel and referred to by Christ (Matthew 24:15ff and other passages), and was foreshadowed in the offering of a pig on the altar of the second temple as an act of desecration as performed by Antiochus Epiphanes IV, sometime during the time of the Maccabees.
Lots of books have been written on this.

In the Book of Revelation Paul calls the Abomination of Desolation sitting where "HE" doesn't belong.

After studying the Book of Daniel chapter 9:17 and the comment Paul made - I see an Abominable Temple sitting (just as Daniel said) on a wing of the Temple.....

Currently - the only religious temple sitting on the Temple Mount (former site of the Solomon's Temple) is the Muslim Mosque, "The Dome of the Rock".

All that is missing is "THE" Antichrist.., a powerful political / religious figure. I personally believe this will be the Muslim's awaited Mahdi.., or at least a figure who passes himself off as the Muslim's Mahdi.

When you see him sitting in that temple which sits on a wing of the former holy temple that Solomon built - this will signify that the Antichrist is here and Jesus will return within 3 to seven years from that time.

I expect this Mahdi to do some major function from that place, perhaps even make the seven year treaty with Israel, maybe even by force.

Another possibility is that the Antichrist is purely something else - the founder of Islam "Mohammad" who is a figure head for the Muslim religion. This is a bit complicated but still bears some consideration.

I believe it has two fulfillments first when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and a future one.
Jesus talks about heading for the hills when you see this, when you see the abomination in the city i.e the holy place. This happened when the Romans surrounded Jerusalem for the first time then withdrew. Allowing for those who paid attention to Jesus to escape.
The future meaning.....
The Roman Government in this case must represent some type of world power somewhere it doesn't belong in the same way the Romans didn't belong in Jerusalem the religious center of the Jews.
I believe the Abomination refers too a government destroying religion.

The abomination of desolation is both a person and an event.
When anti-christ (the Beast) establishes himself as god, and commands people to worship him in the Temple.

Mt. 24:15
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Mark 13:14
But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:

wouldnt that refer to the killing of the power of the earth to bring forth life like plants and the animals that belong to the earth ,, a desolation is a desert right and the earth was given to man as a garden then surrendered to satan by mans fall and the progressive poisoning of the earth and the rape of its goodness and its resources is an abomination against the gift of GOD as in the salting of the earth to poison it after a battle to keep folkes from living there again
