According to the Torah, the slaying of the first born was one of the plagues visited upon the Egyptians as Moses asked for the Israelites' release from slavery. The Israelites marked their doorways with ram's blood, as I recall, so that the angel of death would "pass over" their houses and thus not take their first born, only those of the Egyptians. This then is the origin of the name of the Jewish Holiday "Passover".

In the olden days people sacrificed their first born because it was commanded by God - "All that openeth the matrix is mine!"

Jews and Christians alike will say that only the "evil pagans", the Phoenicians and the Canaanites practiced child sacrifice, but there is plenty of archaeological evidence (and Biblical evidence) to suggest that this was prevalent and acceptable among the Jews as well.
