I am 5' 3.5" tall. I am interested in riding a bike to work (8 miles with 4 being on a busy road and 4 being on a bike path). I am also interested in potentially doing some easy mountain biking at some point. I have no idea what size bike to look for, but have been checking out some on ebay and craigslist. Any suggestions?

If you are riding a bike to work each day, stay with a road bike. Perhaps a flat bar version.

If your doing it almost everyday, your best to stay with the best bike for the job. If you want to do some mountain biking later on, buy a mountain bike with the money you will save from riding the road bike to work. (most of us have at least one of each).

To get the right sized bike. you are best to go to your local bike shop and ask.

Some bike manufactures measure c-c (centre of pedals to centre of top bar) others measure c-t (centre to top) (seat post length) .Your leg and torso length make a difference also.

Mountain and road bikes are different. You won't have the same measurement for both.

I am a similar height to you and have a Marin. I would recommend any of the female models of this brand as the one I have is nice and light yet strong - great for the road going to work and heaps of fun on the track. I have one with dual suspension but you really only need front (which are about half the price). Check them out at any good bike store and they will match up the perfect model for your size and needs.

Try the Giant Cypress. It's a good bike for a little off roading and works well for the road as well.

For a cool lineup of mountain bikes of your personal choice visit Wheel World! ( www.wheelworld.com)--small or extra small frames may be available---just ask them. Also try Jenson USA ( www.jensonusa.com), Kim's Bike Shop (www.kimsbikeshop.com)---their prices are incredible!

Sounds like a hybird is a better choice for you. I would take a look at the Giant Cypress or Sadona. Enjoy!
