The elliptical trainer has less impact on your joints and makes you use more muscles and consequently burn more energy per session compared to a treadmill.
The treadmill is more functional if you have specific fitness goals. If you have a good pair of shoes and a good running gait it is also very effective. It does not support your body weight so it will promote bone growth and it also uses lots of muscles.
You can also track your heart rate to see what effect each one has on your system.
It depends on the training goals that you have as far as which one is better for you. Using them both will give you a good variety and keep things interesting. Running on a good surface outside is better than running on a treadmill though, as you don't gain leg momentum from the moving belt.

The one that gets used the most. I bought an elliptical 3 years ago and it's a great peice of equipment, but in hind sight...I wish I bought a treadmill. Treadmmills can be used for serious running training...or just walking....hill workouts...or just a jog. It's all preference...and the one that you think you'll use the most is the one that I would get. Check out the link below for some tips on treadmill buying if you go that route. Best of luck!

If you get the elliptical that your arms move as well, then the elliptical is better. You will get the full range of motion that your body needs and running, you might not. With the elliptical, your range of motion is maintained with your entire body equally in motion. On a treadmill, you might not give yourself the range of motion your arms and waist needs to get more muscle or slim down. Also, treadmills are pretty hard on your knees and overtime, you might start to have chronic knee pain (common in runners). The elliptical gives you softer, but just as effective movement and exercise.

I am not sure which is more effective but I use both reguarly. I seem to notice that while running (at 6.2) on the treadmill it seems to get my heart-rate up alot more but it takes more time to burn calories. Yet, the elliptical seems easier to do but for some reason well at least according to the digital reader, it burns way more calories faster than the treadmill. They both seem to be equally effective for losing weight as long as you do them consistently though.

I've tried both. The elliptical trainer is more whole body inclusive, especially if you increase the level. The treadmill is good to, especially if you increase the incline. It just depends on which you like best. Just use what you are most likely to stick with. Good luck.

Do the elliptical for awhile and change to the treadmill and keep interchanging. Your body adjustes pretty fast so if you are on one machine for too long you will not see results, always give your body a challenge and you'll burn the fat off

I've tried both and personally feel the treadmill is a better move. I didn't feel challenged enough by the eliptical trainer.

I have used both at the gym. They both have all the gadges that show how fast, how far, how many calories burned, etc. I usually burn almost twice as many calories on the elliptical.

Music forces you to eat more. According to a report by the journal Psychology and also Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage someone to take time over your mealtime, so you consume more meals. So, switch off – silence is likely to make you more aware of what you’re investing in your mouth.

It’s Friday brunch time and you simply can’t stop going back intended for seconds. But hang on! Stop to get a minute and suck on an extra strong mint. The flavour will probably put you off that next plate of chicken korma/roast beef/sushi medley.
