I made a huge mistake earlier on in my life and got a ridiculous tattoo on my forearm. It is not racist or degrading in any way. Im trying to get it removed but it is a very slow and expensive process. But. that is a different story. I guess I would just like to know if this will prohibit me from joining up.

it is very visible and written in fairly large letters. It cannot be covered up unless I wear long sleeve shirts.

Anything these days would get you into the armed forces. Even if you have criminal records. So tattoo come on, the military needs people.

By the way on a normal situation Tattoo would not be a problem. You say a ridiculous tattoo mhmmm might be a problem.

The military ( I know the Navy has) has changed their policy on tattoos. Mainly, tattoos are fine, provided that they can be covered up when wearing your uniform. What this means is, a tattoo on your forearm won't necessarily keep you from being able to enter the military--seeing as you have it at the time of entrance. However, if you were to get it after you'd joined then it would be frowned upon. Like you, I have a tattoo on my forearm that reaches from my elbow to my wrist. However, I got it before this new policy was enacted. I wouldn't worry about it, man. It will be documented that you got it upon entrance so there's really nothing that can be done about it.

I recently read an article in the El Paso times news paper that the regs have been relaxed and that as long as the tat isn't disrespectful or vulgar or racist they are accepting people and they can't be on the face. Check the story on line at El Paso times web site.

As long as the tattoo is not above your buttocks with an arrow pointing down and saying "insert here" above the arrow, you should be alright.

My friend is in the Navy, basically all tattoos and piercings have to be in places where they cannot be seen in uniform.

Well I imagine "Gay Pride" or Nazi insignia type tattoos might be frowned upon! Just show it to the recruiter, they'll advise you.
