Mini DV Deck that's cheaper than GV-D1000?

Question

I've owned a Canon GL2 for about 2-3 years...haven't used it for a very long time.

I just found out that the firewire port on the camera is damaged.

Anyone have suggestions on a mini-dv deck that can bring the dv tape data into a computer and still retain great quality?

The Sony GV-D1000 has too many features I don't need and it's priced at around a grand. (not worth it).

As for miniDV decks, to tell you the truth, I don't know anything about them. But, if you haven't used your GL2 for a very long time, consider selling it (I'd buy a second one if I had the money! :-). It's a great, great camera, but it's fairly old, and since you're not using it often, it won't get any newer in 2-3 years time.

If you aren't planning on selling it, then do what olin1963 said and buy an ultra-cheap camera (eBay is a good place to do this). However, like I said in the above, if you're not using it that much, you might as well sell the GL2 and get a good camera, instead of keeping one with a damged port and a crappy camera.

Also, consider the price of fixing the port. If it's not too expensive, it might be cheaper and better than getting a separate camera, as sometimes reading tapes with another camera can distort the image and cause loss of quality. Buy an inexpensive MiniDV camcorder with a Firewire port. The format is digital so the playback quality via Firewire will be identical whether you are using a GL2 or a $300 camcorder. Plus, you can leave it connected continually to your NLE to avoid the hookup hassles.
