We are remodeling our bathroom...and I would love to get a jacuzzi tub. Someone was telling me water in the "tubes" can collect bacteria...and that creeped me out. How do you clean them? How often? Etc.

They sell a very inexpensive chemical for that - it comes in the form of tablets, liquid or a powder and it is not exactly chlorine - its made just for hot tubs.

I have never had that problem and I have had a Jacuzzi/jet tub in my bathroom for over six years. When I got my first house we had it put in and my neighbour was one of the sales reps for the company that had supplied the builder with all of the soaker/jet tubs. He gave me a small container of stuff to clean the tubes out with but when I ran out he learned it was just dishwasher soap.

So, fill the tub up over the jets with warm to hot water. Put in about a 1/4 cup of dishwasher soap and let the tub run for about 10 mintutes. Drain and then fill again with cold water and let it run for another 10 minutes.

I only did this once a year and my wife has sensitive skin (see post on the hot tub, my wife had those dots!) and she has never had a problem with the jacuzzi tub as the water is always fresh.

a tub in your bathroom is not as difficult as a 'hot tub' which needs chemical treatments to keep it balanced

once you are done bathing, drain your water... fill with hot clean water up to the jet level.... add 1/4 cup chlorine bleach... run the jets for a couple minutes (adding soap will make suds that will be a nightmare to get rid of) then drain and it should be ready to go. the 'tub part' will be basic and will have the instructions when you purchase the tub on how to surface clean it.

we had a jet tub in our bathroom and never had a problem with keeping it fresh and clean using this method.

That someone told you right. Bacteria can build up and cause red bumps to form on your body (i speak from experience). It's important that you get something like a spongue to soak up oils and clean the hottub at least once a week. If you use it a lot, it's a great investment. If not, weigh your decision carefully. As for how you clean it, ask your hot tub dealer. They are the ones sthat have to come and do it.

You can add some bleach to it while it is still running and that germicidal action will go through the tubes and leave a chlorine residual in them. Sounds like "someone" who was telling you had a case of "jacuzzi envy."

Our maid says its very easy to clean,
but we suspect she is not cleaning it.
I clean it once a mo. and she is supposed to also.
it looks alot cleaner after I do it.
