Gif files are or can be animated.. they have colour loss (or less depending on compression, max: 256 colours).

Jpeg files are great for photos, or large images.. that colour restriction are higher except and it looks more suitable.

Gifs = genrally used for small images, animations, buttons..
Jpegs = generally used for photos, large images, save alot of space using this format on large images (depending on compression).

The file formats are a huge thing, I've studied it, trust me you don't wanna know the details !!

GIF is a technology created by CompuServe and it included a compression scheme called LZW that was owned by Unisys. The GIF image became popular along with JPEG for images on the web. When Unisys became aware of their patented compression in the GIF files, they decided that they would charge commercial companies for using the LZW compression. Many companies rejected the GIF format and used either JPEG or another format called PNG. PNG didn't become too popular as not all browsers supported the format. In 2003, the LZW patent expired.

I don't know that one format works any better than the other although the JPEG 2000 format adds many improvements over the original JPEG. I'm not sure if GIF has evolved much but the animated GIF (GIF 89) is useful for websites with a little action.

It is not that JPEGs are better than GIFs, but that each has a specific function. JPEGs are primarily used for photographs because the JPEG standards/format provides for more colors and great detail. GIFs can be animated and are better for crisp items where you want clean edges and lines, such as icons and text. For example, on the standard Yahoo! Answers page, there are "ask" "answer" and "discover" along the top, these are all GIFs.

So, if you want icons, or menu buttons, or something you want to do a basic animation on, etc., use GIF, but if you have photographs, etc., use JPG.

Sometimes GIFs show all the little pixels better on whatever site you are uploading them to so they are probably better, but...
GIFs are usually used for moving pictures like icons, and some sites dont allow moving pics so they want to make sure there are none by using JPEGs which dont move. JPEGs are not as hard to copy on to sites.

JPEGs are much smaller in file size and offer many more colors than a gif.

The only downside (in web design), is that it often compresses/pixelates the edge around objects (which results in some pixels around an object endeding up being slightly pinkish.

But JPEGs are great for anything you're going to view on screen and don't need to print precisely. (such as company logos, etc).

because JPEG's have a wider color range.
GIF's have a good supply, but not as good as a JPEG.
try it.
get out a JPEG image and convert it into a GIF. you might see some color loss action going on.

GIFs are not compatible on every computer and have bigger size, JPEGs are widely recognised and smaller.

jpegs support more colors and are oftenly used in photographs because of their millions of colors.
but gifs support few basic colors and are mainly used in animated objects like cartoon characters etc.........

File sizes are in most cases smaller. If you want animated files you need gif files. BMP files are hugh!

first of all love your name, its mine too.

and gifs come out messier and somewhat pixelized and ugly.

i stick with pngs and jpgs and make my graphics come out best they show up much cleaner because of the space they take up
