Beyond any spiritual reasoning to talk a person into it, I am wondering about the benefits of a 24 hour period with no eating with the body as a temple. No stimulants too. Is the stomach sick of always working and wants to dry out sometimes? I guess I have the ancients to thank for coming up with this.

Provided you must not take special medication--other than blood pressure pills--your body will benefit greatly from a 24-hour fast.

Getting past the first meal time is always a little difficult, but once that is gone you can dwell on the spiritual aspect of fasting, and that is to draw closer to God spiritually and in tune with Him.

Often, after my fast I can go much longer without food, but I give in when I come home and smell the victuals ready for consumption.

There are definitely health benefits. Your body can definitely use a break once in a while to detox, esp from things like sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Just remember to drink lots of water while you are doing it. It's good for your body and will speed the process along.
I think most people who do it for religious reasons usually go for longer than 1 day. It was usually done to show faith, as penance, or to inspire visions or other communication with god.

I have found that when I fast, I am emotional, and I am more ready to depend wholly on God. One of my favorite passages is in second Corinthians 12, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Also I think maybe it shows God we are really serious about what we are praying for to the point of sacrificing our comfort.

It's really about fasting from thoughts so one can know the truth of themselves. But very few know this because of false information.
