the lowest A on the piano is 27.5 hz. Meaning it vibrates 27 and a half times a second. Every note that we perceive has its own number of vibrations per second. Going down an octave reduces the number of vibrations per second by half. Going up an octave doubles the vibrations per second. So we have established that the lowest A on the piano is 27.5, the next is 55, the A string on a double bass or an electric bass. The next A is 110 at which the A string on a guitar sounds. The next is 220 which is the register of the A string on a violoncello. The FIFTH A from the bottom on a piano is the 440 A. This is the A above Middle C. This is also the A string on violins and violas. The A 440 is the standard reference tuning note in the USA. In Europe they prefer a slightly higher A, 444 being quite common. In earlier centuries the A was lower; in the 430s.

The A usually used to tune in a group is in the staff in treble clef.

440 refers to the htz (hertz), or the rate the note vibrates in the air. Most instruments are tuned to A440, however it can vary on that. Flutes especially vary from maker to maker. Most of your common makers tune to A440, however they also tune to A442. It is actually important to know what your instrument is tuned to. If you know that you are tuned to 442, then you know you are going to be sharp compared to the rest that is tuned to 440.
