Do as many as you can, even with the pain. Then don't do any tomorrow.
Day after tomorrow do the same number as you did the first day.
Then don't do any the next day.
The day following that do the same number as you did the first day, again.
Before you know it, not only will the pain go away, but you will also be able to increase the number of push-ups or pull-ups you can do AND you will be developing a good habit.
The pain is just your muscles saying, "I don't know what this is that you are doing to me." After a while, your muscles will not only get used to it, but they will actually LIKE IT!

It depends on what type of pain you are experiencing. If you feel you are about to pull or injure yourself than of course you should stop. If it is just tiredness from exercising than you can carefully continue, but you should be able to work hard without feeling you are going to injure yourself. I do modified push ups because regular ones hurt my shoulders. You sorta have to learn for yourself how much you can take and I would say err on the side of caution. As long as you are exercising you are doing good, you don't have to risk hurting yourself.

Well...what kind of hurt? Is it sharp pain or a burn in your muscle? Are you sure it's in your muscle and not your joint?
Whenever you feel any sharp pain always stop-pain is always a warning signal.
If you're feeling a burn in your muscles this means you're pushing them to failure. In order to build muscle this takes time and you'll need to for instance do 5 of them. When you can do 5 of them without alot of burning then add one and keep building from there. It takes patience to build your muscles up to a point where they can do more and more. Be sure to give them a day of rest in-between the workouts for recovery. They need it, or else you'll get injuries......

Exercise can be uncomfortable..and that is good. Painful is not good. It you're having any sharp pain, I'd stop, regroup, and decide if it warrants medical attention. If it's uncomfortable, than you're stressing your muscles. To strengthen your muscles, you need to stress & rest them. Over time, it'll get easier and you'll need to do more than 2 to feel any discomfort. Check out the link below to make sure that you're doing the exercies properly. Best of luck.
