Why does anxiety bring on feelings of guilt? I'm a bit anxious and sleepless about an exam tomo and I've started getting all anxious about something i did 20yrs ago, when i was 6 (a mate dared me to jab my teaching asst in the backside with a pencil)!!! Admittedly this is a cringeworthy thing to do but I was just a kid who didn't know better, why am I worrying and embarassed and guilty about this 20yrs later?????

It could definitely be anxiety. I have the same type of problems. I worry about things a lot too. And no, I do not think you are a bad person. You poked someone's bum with a pencil. That is not half as bad as what I did when I was a kid. I planted a tack on a woman's chair at church (church, for cripes sake) and she sat on it. She dang near passed out. I really felt bad after that one. I never thought I would be guilty of nearly sending someone to hospital.

It is a reflex in some people I believe, I always get that way too if something comes up on TV and I recall it with an event in my life I'd rather forget I worry about it for days and days often to the point of where I become sick.

I have combatted the problems with breathing exercises and positive mantras but, they still creep up on me from time to time

you see certain thoughts bring about certain feelings. the fact that you ar thinking about your exam is making you feel anxious. As a result the feelings that we get about a certain thought brings about a certain behaviour. In your case it seems like you are experincing feelings of guilt. What you need to find out is what exacly are you thinking just before the feelings of guilt come along coz i dont think its the exam.keep telling your mind that it was along time ago and that noone got hurt.. try do this everytime the thoughts come along.

Ur not a terrible person! U were just a kid and Im sure ur teacher dosent even remember it and if they do they arent upset by it in the slightest. So just be firm with yourself and refuse those feelings.
Its very bad for ur emotional and mental health (and studying) to keep feeling guilty abt things that should be forgotten long ago......I sometimes feel bad for things that I really shouldnt and its a liberation to say to that feeling that ur going to kick its ***, and then do so.

I have the same feelings to a certain extent, I fel guilty about some things I said or did (though Mine feelings don't go as far back as yours) you just have to tell yourself that was the past and I have to learn from my mistakes and get on with life....you only live once, no sense on dwelling on the past.

Anxiety is largely due to lack of confidence and lack of preparation.Examination frar is due to both of this. You have to realise that PAST is PAST and you cannot correct. Those who think about past and destry the present are fools, they cannot succeed. You forget the past and start a new life.Have confidence and do preparation. You are the winner.Good Luck.
Please donot forget any body may make mistake,if you can correct it,good:otherwise forget it.

I can't give you an answer as to why you feel this way. Just know you are not alone. I get this way too, and I always thought I was the only one.
