Metro north trains run very frequently from NYC Grand Central Station to Stamford. Several times per hour.
Go to the website below and choose the New Havrn line of the Metro North.

Trains are fairly frequent.

You go on the New Haven line of MTA from Stamford into Grand Central. There are about 20 trains that travel the route between 6AM and 8AM (over 80 in a weekday). I think you should be able to find a seat. On-peak fares range between $11.64 (on web) and $17.00 each way (if you get it on the train). No discount for a round trip. Wow, that sure has gone up since the 70s (I used to ride from Grand Central to Bridgeport, where I was going to school... cost about seven dollars round trip then).

The monthly cost is $264.

I went to MTA's web site:

The red line goes up the Connecticut coast.

Here's the schedule for March 12th, which is a typical weekday schedule between Stamford and Grand Central:

It takes between 50 minutes and 66 minutes, depending on stops.
