The average time to get aq passport the first time is 6-8 weeks. If you travel is imminent, you can get expedited service in two weeks for an additional fee and if you are lucky enough to live near a regional passport office you can get it in one day.

I applied for mine during a slow travel season, and received it back in about 2-3 weeks. Of course, mine went to New Orleans and it was pre-Katrina, so I don't know if the timeframe has changed. They always say that to be safe, you should allow 6-10 weeks to get it, depending on how busy they are.
