Well they say cats pick their owners... perhaps it has picked you.... From your line it sounds like you already have a cat...

You sound compassionate you gave it food and milk....

I think the no-kill humain shelter is an excellent idea

I remember this woman telling me her cat went missing and she wanted me to feel sorry for her.. she moved out of her house and left her cat outside of the old one and when she returned a few days later it was gone.. Moron.. when you move you take all your pets with you at the same time you move... one of the first things to come to my house were my cats, I moved them first.

You sound like a very caring person and I understand the delima of wanting to help an animal but not being able to keep it. But, remember, if you call your local humane society or local shelter, chances are that cat will be put down (that's a nice way of saying killed!)
The most important thing is that the cat is eating and drinking. I bet if you posted flyers, told the sad story, some loving family would gladly adopt it. And I'd like to praise the yahoo user who answered about calling a no kill shelter! Yay!

It will not cost you if you surrender the cat because you found it as a stray. Take it to your local shelter, it may need vet attention!
How horrible of those owners! Was it their house that burned down? Did they ask you to keep it for a couple of days?
I feel sorry for you, but you have to take it to a shelter.
