The cool thing about running is that everyone has their own scale, in terms of what's "decent". If you enter a 5k race, you may find the winning time to be anywhere from 15-18 minutes...and the winner could be anyone from the age of 18-40! Most races that I've entered recently, a 5k time under 19:30 is top-5 caliber for the 20-29 age group.
The link below has a 5k training plan and some tips on setting a goal pace. After you're a few weeks into it, go out to the track and do a 1-mile time trial (race pace). Enter that time in the race prediction calculator & that should give you a good 5k goal time.
Best of luck!

I think an 7 - 8 minute mile pace is a respectable time. I ran a 21:32 this past weekend, and I didn't even start moving until about 20-30 seconds later because it was almost 1,000 people. The winner was 40 years old and almost had a 15 flat!

It depends a lot on the person. If you want to be competitive you need to get down around 16-18 minutes. But for people just starting to run 25 minutes is a good mark to aim for.

If the course is slightly hilly, I would say between 20-23 minutes. That all depends on how athletic/in shape you are to begin with, but as a girl who runs a lot, I usually end up coming in with athletic guys who dont run THAT much, and other girls like me.
