I was Marine infantry from 1982-1985. I have served in several "infantry support" units in the Army reserve and NG. As for training, as one person here stated, you don't get to be a ninja, but you do learn to defend yourself.

Marine basic will give you a good overview of basic hand-to-hand as well as squad tactics, some air assault as well as land assault tactics, etc. These consist of how to exit a helo or track vehicle and set up a hasty 360 defencive perimiter.

After basic, you will go to ITS or Infantry Training School which is 4 more weeks of bootcamp with weekend liberty and nightly time off with restrictions thrown in for good measure. Here you will get the detailed training of squad tactics and other infantry skills like map reading, compass use, more detailed use of your weapon, as well as being assigned a designated weapon- IE: machine gun, mortor, M-16,etc., more detailed hand-to-hand training, how many insects can chew on you at once during the night without bleeding you dry, etc.

Once you get to your assigned duty station, your training will continue until your unit is deployed, at which time you will put your skills to use.

As for no civilian skills, any law enforcment agency or corrections department will give you a massive amount of bonus points for being former infantry and snap you up in a heartbeat.

The mortality rate is probably higher for Marine infantry because they are mostly in the Anbar Province in Iraq which is better known as the Sunni Triangle. Ar Ramadi is the capital of this region and is called the deadliest city on earth. I spent 11 months there with the NG and served with many Marines. The Army is spread across Iraq and not centralized anywhere, so they are in peaceful areas as well as nasty areas.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

The skills that you will learn will include firing the weopen platform for your job, depending on weather your planning on being a rifleman or gunner (gunners rule!!). You will learn how to care for this weopen, fire it, and put it to use as part of a team.

You should do unarmed combat, grenade ranges.

It's not all that much supertraining in recruit training, it's just the first block to a pyrimid of training. The real challenges lay ahead when you reach your battalion, or enter special forc es selection!!!

cheers,
josh

DONT LITSEN TO ERUDITE!!! if you enlist in the marines you'll be trained as a riflemen no matter what. the army, you go to basic, and if you go infanty then you'll learn infantry tecniqes and what not. both branchs train you in hand-to-hand combat, and bayonets. i'm not sure about the mortality rate, but in our current war it doesnt really matter what uniform you got on when a roadside bomb hits you.

They won't teach you, they'll show you. It's only a couple of months; you're not going to learn how to be a ninja in a couple of months.

Yes they teach you to kill. But remember this....When you get out you will have no skills the civilian population can use. Go to College and be someone.
