What kind of edits do you want to do?

You can right click on a blank area of a slide and select background. From this point you can change colors, remove graphics, etc., You can apply these changes to a single slide, or to all. You can also save the new format as a .ppt template.

You can also start from a blank template page and insert graphics, photos, etc., and then save it as a new template.

Just open the template that you are wanting to use. Make the changes that you want. Save the template under the same name as what you opened initially. This will override the old file with the one that you made the changes to. Make sure that it is saved in template format.
