That's kind of a tricky one, given that for it to have personal meaning it has to be... well, personal. And something that's deeply personal to me could have absolutely no meaning to you, and vice versa.

When I say that I think the best tattoos are those that have personal significance, what I mean is that the person havinng the tattoo done has thought about it and ascribed a particular meaning to it. Tattoos (with some exceptions, where a tattoo has a particular meaning within a certain group of people - criminal tattoos, for instance) aren't a language to be read, so much as an artform. The meaning they have is the meaning you choose to give them.

So, my advice for anyone wanting to come up with a tattoo idea with personal significance would be to firstly reflect on their life, their goals, aspirations, successes, interests... and then, from these, fix on something they want to represent via a tattoo, and begin thinking about images that have meaning to them. No-one can really tell you what has meaning for you; it's something you have to work out for yourself.

Hope this makes sense... sorry if it's a bit cryptic!

any tattoo can have personal meaning as long as you get it for a specific reason and not just because you picked it off of a wall.
the best ideas are when you think of something that reminds you of your family or your friends or a specific event in your life, when you associate the tattoo with that then it becomes so special.

I watch that show on TLC every Tuesday "Miami Ink". I love all the work they do. Everyone has a story with their tatoo they are getting, each different, but everyone cool.
You should see their website.
Anything and Everything can have meaning, it is just a matter of what is meaningfull to YOU. I got my tattoo when I had a major life changing experience. I got a very large butterfly put above my breast's. For me it simbolizes the change from one thing to another, finally being free to fly.
So you have to choose what is going on or has gone on in your life that has so much meaning to YOU, that you want to remember it for the rest of YOUR life.
One guy got a dragonfly done to remember his son who had died. One guy got a prortrait of his mother. A rapper got a whole back piece done to commorate his new album "the Bad Apple" his view of how he saw New York where he grew up.
Everyone is different. Anything can have a Meaning.

A relative recently got a compass tattoo. She had some pretty bad problems in the past and is starting to get her life back on track. She said the compass is to remind her that she once lost her way but is now on the right path.
