I've been out only in my sleep but practicing relaxation techniques produced some realy interesting experiences. I've been more successfull with seeing beyond my body. Got a friend all upset once by winning that lottery thing at the bar several times in a row ( decided to see the numbers that were there but a few minutes ahead in time ), could only do it $ 1 or 2 doller bets up to winning $24 or 27 dollars or something. Paid back the original barrowed dollar and quit ( " fealt my winning streak coming to an end " ) . My friend got upset and wanted to prove I could'nt do it again. Said what numbers would you have picked if you kept it up. Staring him in the face I looked thru the back of my skull and diectly at the screen and read the numbers I saw....he freaked, couldn't belive I picked the numbers again. Could'nt explain of course that all along I simply looked into the future and saw the number that was going to be there at each specific time, and that the last one I didn't pick but just read off the screen by looking thru the back of my head. I was leaving one job for another so was in a real good mood and the stakes were so low I didn't care if I won or lost. That would explain the ease of my sight though I see things pretty clearly on occasion if nothing is distracting me and I put out the intention strong enough.
I stopped trying astral projection like almost 20 years ago but heres what helped me.
Laying down comfy like and relaxing at night, lights out , no distracting sounds. I used common breathing techniques to relax my body and slow down my pulse and all. Breathing in through the nose slowly and letting slow deep breaths out the mouth. That was usually enough to get that light bodyless feeling but I never actually left exept finding myself outside at night after I had fallen asleep. There was also a technique of visuallising light filling my body slowly starting at the head and working your way down the whole body. Tried it but the results were more what kind of strange or fantastic things happened after falling asleep.
I don't currently have a fealing of need to leave because things in life been goin well and I recall some of my past and realised I'll be out again soon enough. I do once in a while have an experience duing sleep, saw an explosion in my home town few months back. Few day's later it happened just like in the dream, was a fire and explosions. I heard the explosions and saw the smoke during the day from above in the dream. Decided to go down and take a look. I walked the site in the dream, saw the burnt down factory, toppled brick walls on the street, and thaught it was just a dream. Saw it in the paper a few days later, was kind of supprised, but was exactly as I saw.
I would go to that Edgar Cayce site for info on astral projection and such. He seemed to know alot of stuff.
Link will be below.

Well, for one, this belongs in Paranormal Phenomena and not R&S (unless you're a member of my religion, which I'm pretty sure you're not). Second, ignore these idiots (the first five answerers. Projection is real, and you can't get trapped outside your body, so don't worry about that. Third, just keep working and try to remain emotionless. Emotions interfere with the projection process. You really want more information, email me at fenris121@yahoo.com.

A serious answer...that is a perfectly normal reaction. you need to start with short simple journeys. Just wander around the room. And when you first start to leave your body, allow your spirit to look back at your body. that way you won't fear that you are permanently abandoning your body. then take a short trip around the room, down the hall and return. as you do this more and more, you'll become more used to that feeling and it won't seem to freaky.

Part of reaching that alternate state of consciousness is facing that very fear. Try meditation beforehand to slowly bring your mind to a heightened state of awareness. It also helps to be comfortable so you aren't so worried about losing control of your body. I know many people who prefer laying down.

I understand that unless one has a solid grip on grammar and spelling, astral projection can be very dangerous.

That is your sense of reason interfering with your ability to imagine things. That is actually a sign that you aren't totally insane yet.
