Swelling can indicate an infection either in the cutaneous aspect of the wound or subcutaneously (i.e., the muscle wall). It may also be an indication that the stitches are not dissolving and your body is reacting to them.

Swelling, in general though, usually indicates infection. If it has been longer than a few days after your repair, see your surgeon. You may need antibiotics. If less than a few days, well, swelling is common directly following surgery, but should reduce day by day.

You DON'T want to mess with an infection though. They can kill. I don't mean to freak you out, but very fearful of the possibility. Found out about the seriousness of infections the hard way last year. Could have died, and, really didn't have a clue!! Geez. Have had a hernia repair as well and encountered the aforementioned probs. See your surgeon. Better safe than sorry. It's their job to monitor your recovery.

Good question. I am in the same boat. I had surgery for a hernia about two months ago, and I am getting swelling and pain.

it depends where your swelling is. For example, it is common for your scrotum to swell up after hernia repair, especially - this is not alarming b/c it's a physiological response.

Other swelling around your abdomen, fluid leaking out of the wound, fever, redness... should all be checked by your doctor.
