The best person to paint is yourself, with a mirror. Drawing from photographs you start out with a flattened image with a limited color pallet. Looking at a real person is the best thing, because you can see the real colors and set the light up to really excentuate the form of their face. Second to that is painting self portraits. You are always a free availible model for yourself.

paint someone you enjoy or look up to...
otherwise, you'll get bored half way through...
if you enjoy/care about the subject the passion will show in the end product
