They are used for rectification, for clamping or limiting and as detectors (mixer) in radio receivers.
They can also be used in digital circuits as simple gates.

There are also special diodes (varicaps) which are used as voltage controlled capacitors when they are reverse biased.

Another type of special diode is the zener which is used as a simple voltage regulator.

A diode drops a specific voltage in one direction(forward bias), and all of the voltage in another direction(reverse bias). The effect it has on current is sort of like a one-way valve. Current can flow easily one way(forward biased), but is heavily restricted in the other direction(reverse bias).
Diodes block, rectify, filter, and suppress.
