Me and my friend are planning on taking 10 days to go on vacation next june or july. We really want to go to Jamaica very badly mostly cuz of all the music and in july they have a huge reggea concert called sumfest. But there are lots of things we've been reading on how dangerous it is (2 girls by ourselves). Its our first vacation outside of the states and we wanna go tropical. Any ideas on where to stay in Jamaica(montego bay, ocho rios, negril?) or any other caribbean islands you recommend that we could get similar atmosphere and music?? we also want to take the trip that will make our money go the farthest. we are budgeting for $2500 a piece.

Forget Jamaica, after 2 days you won't want anymore gonja, you wont want any more friends and you will hate Reggae!

I got married there and it was where I use to go. After a week I hated it. Annoying people demanding your attention and if you don't want to put up with the same jerks they lecture you on why you are impolite not to put up with their crap.

Try the Dominican Republic and specifically the north coast.

Cabarete would be a great place for you two to go. Lot cheaper than Jamaica and way cooler. Younger sports minded crowd that Kite Surfs, Surfs and Wind Surfs during the day and parties all night long on the beach where all the clubs are. Food is great and cheap by the standards you are use to.

You would fly into Puerto Plata Airport.

Half the price of Jamaica and the people are beautiful and man can they dance. Merenge and Bachata are the native venues and Salsa and Reggaeton is also popular. Laid back with no hassles and safer than your mamas womb!:)

The Dominican Republic is the most traveled to Island in the Caribbean overtaking Puerto Rico for the first time last year.

If you insist on Jamaica definately go to Negril

Try Cuba, Bahamas, Barbados as a few excellent alteratives. If you are American you can always fly out of Canada just dont get your passport stamped in Cuba. This would be your cheapest choice. You can easily find an all inclusive 4* resort for 2 weeks in July for $1000-1200 CDN if you book last minute. Try Varadero it is the closest to Havana if you want to see it and the most built up area. The beach in Varadero is one of the whitest and sandiest in the world and I beleive it is about 60 miles long. If you end up going to Jamaica I would stay in either Ocho Rios or Montego Bay if you want things to do off the resort close by. Negril would be my first choice if you want beautiful beaches but is very quiet. Nassau in Bahamas is very easy to get to for 3-14 night vacations. Everything is close to town and have very good casinos and night life. Lots of stuff to do. Snorkeling is excellent here. Barbados is beautiful and probably tied for my first favorite. Barbados is an english "colony" and is very upscale. There is night life in the Gap / Downtown area but most resorts are fairly remote. Quite, peaceful, and lots of tours to do. Barbados will cost you quite a bit more than Cuba but is well worth the money as long as you stay at a quality hotel. I think the freindliest people I found while travelling would be Cuba but they were very friendly and welcoming in Barbados. I hope this was a help.

The best island in the Caribbean is St. Thomas! You don't even need a passport to get there. U.S. citizens are not required to have passports or proof of citizenship when ENTERING the U.S. Virgin Islands from a U.S. airport. All arrivals to the U.S. Virgin Islands from foreign airports are required to show proof of citizenship and pass through customs. All persons leaving the U.S. Virgin Islands, whether American citizens or not, must be prepared to show proof of citizenship upon leaving the islands to return to the mainland. The official language is English and they use American money. I have been there several times the music is great, the natives are friendly, shopping is cheap, and the views are extraordinary. You can also take an affordable water taxi to St. Thomas another local island. St. Thomas is the home of one of the Top Ten Beaches in the World, Magen's Bay Beach. The food is a great price as compared to Nassau in the Bahamas; it is about the same price as home. As where the food in Nassau is almost double in price.

I have been to Jamaica twice and you can not leave the hotel site after dark. Plus during the day you need to say with friends never roam alone. The locals and venders are very aggressive. If you are an American Female visiting Jamaica the local ladies will be jealous of you because they think you are trying to steal there men and bring them back home, and the reverse if you are a man. You will feel harassed if you try to bargain for a better price when dealing with the Jamaican dollar. They have no problems asking for money and they will try to sell you weed at every pass. I have never felt harassed in St. Thomas or Nassau.
The one place I did love you must see Dunn's River Falls, it is a must see if you are deciding to travel there.

I highly recommend Barbados. Not only it offers a great nightlife, but friendly people. If 2 girls, I think it's safe to stay at Pegwell Inn Guest House as a cheapest accommodation, I stayed there once when I came there for my first visit.

My sister and her friends went to Jamaica, and stayed in Negril, she said it's alright. So I assume that it wasn't the rocket best vacation for her. But from the pictures, it looks beautiful.

Barbados is more east, but I think airfares are not too hard to find as well as accommodation. You can trust this lady because I did, and I'm glad that I took this chance. :D

If you find the cheapest fare, to go with cheapest accommodation, you're in luck. :)

Jamica NOT good choice for 2 young girls. Go somewhere else. Anywhere else. But not Jamica. It's not safe there anymore, and you'll just end up staying all day and all night at your resort because of this. And don't go to Puerto Rico either. Same thing. Try Aruba. And try to increase your budget, it's pretty expensive anywhere you go. Get your passports in order, you'll need them anywhere except for the US Virgin Islands. St. Thomas is nice, but it's expensive, and starting to get dangerous at night. Frankly, you'd probably be a lot better off in Orlando, and going to City Walk if you like to club. It's at Universal Studios, in the middle. And there a ton of stuff to do in Orlando and area.

Try out Curacao. Plenty to see during the day, plenty to do at night, and very easy to move around (either public transportation or car rental). All kinds of music is played here (from reggea to salsa, merengue and rock), and you will find enough places to go partying. There is also a ery relaxing envitoment during the day, while offering plenty to keep you busy. Remember to try some local food as well.

Breezes hotel highly recommended.
