I keep it in an airtight plastic container, and the pourer that we use seems pretty protective, too. I know putting rice grains in salt shakers is effective for the same problem, but isn't there a different method for sugar?

It's almost impossible because the humidity will lump it often. Put it in a tight-fitting plastic container with a few saltine cracker squares. They will absorb any moisture that sneaks in.

Sugar is more attracted to water then salt, which makes a big difference when you are in a humid area. Do not keep your sugar on or neer your stove(due to excess moisture), those "pourers" they keep in reastaraunts are great for a multitude of people, however you don't use that much sugar day to day so keep it in an airtight container.

I've seen old school coffee shops that have a saltine cracker in the jar of sugar. Seems to work, though i have never done it.

Make sure you don't have it in a moist environment.
