It really is different for each dog as well as each nail. If you have never trimmed nails before, I recommend you have one of the technicians at your vets office show you how (usually a demo is free). Its not hard to do but does take some time and patience on your (and your dogs) part.
Usually you can look at the nail and see where it starts to become thinner and curved--this is where you usually cut. For dogs with light colored nails, you can see the quick (vein) and can trim just in front of that. For dark colored nails, I recommend trimming small amounts until you can see a small dot in the center of the nail--this means you are getting close to the quick. Pick up some quick-stop powder at the local pet store to have on hand if you cut too close. Trimming a nail too short does produce a lot of blood for such a little cut, but will stop quickly with the powder.
These websites have some good pictures:

Good luck :)

Just clip off the sharp tip only. About 1/4 or 1/5 of the nail. The quick and vein is about halfway.

Shine light through it- you will see a darker color that is full of blood. If you can not tell (dog has really dark nails) I would go to a professional. If you cut into the blood supply, you will probably have trouble cutting that nail for the rest of the dogs life.

Usually if you just cut off the very tip, you will be safe. I am talking a couple millimeters- nothing more than that.

You are looking for the pink area within the nail-AVOID IT, by clipping just beyond that area. Clip ONLY the "white" or lighter area near the nail tip. (It tends to be "Dry" & crumbly)
It is much more difficuilt if your dogs nails are black. If un sure, make an appointment w/ your vet. They usually provide this service at a minimal cost ($10) or so-
Should you accidentally go too short, apply styptic powder, available at most pet stores or pet sections within a store.
It contains something to stop the bleeding as well as antibiotic to protect against infection. In a pinch, regular Flour
can be used to stop bleeding if styptic powder is un available.

Be very careful and have cornstarch at hand also- use dog nail clippers and if you can not see the vein (nails are black) then just clip off the sharp downward curl and go no further but in case you do dip the bleeding nail into the cornstarch and/or babypowder!

just clip off a little bit...if your not sure have a veterinarian or a pet groomer do it because if you cut it too far down the dog can actually bleed to death. i would say a quarter of the way would be fine. there is also this powder stuff you can buy at the pet store to stop the bleeding if you accidently cut it too short goodluck

Clip RIGHT below the pink part. You really should have the vet do that because if you clip that vein it will be very painful for the dog and it bleeds horribly.

I agree, take your dog to the vet. I accidentally cut my dogs nail too short and she hated me for it for some time. Worse still is that it took hours for it to stop bleeding. I felt horrible. Don't make the same mistake. It can't cost more than $10 for the vet to do it. Money well spent.
