I am a 6th grader starting track and am going to do the 1600 meter run and need advice on what shoes to get. What shoes should I get.

Congratulations! I also run the 1600 in track (it's the best). Anyways, I had always just used normal running shoes (I used the Nike Air Pegasus) and found that worked fine for where I was at. Last year, however, I got a lot faster and my coach made me get spikes. I went and got some Adidas cross-country/track spikes that weren't too expensive ($65), and I fell madly in love with them. The next 5k I ran, I dropped my previous personal best by over a minute. They are much lighter, and provide much better traction and grip.

So basically, normal running shoes work fine, but if you're really looking for some extra speed or to get serious, invest in a pair of spikes.

buy good long distance shoes. for distances more than 400m, spikes don't give you much of an advantage. i do the 400 800 1600 and the 4x400 relay and i only use spikes for the 400s. if you don't know whether you underpronate or overpronate or are neutral, make sure you go to a good store so they can help you find shoes that won't cause injuries. try them on and even jog around the store a little before buying and definitely break the shoes in before doing a major workout

for distance running, Asics and New Balence make the best shoes. Stay away from Nike - they make a great basketball shoe but their running shoes are awful, unless you get the really expensive ones.

Old school Nike waffles,... like feathers.

New Balance has the world's worst laces. I used to love New Balance, but it seems that as they jacked up their prices over the years, the quality has deteriorated.

I've never used anything with spikes so I can't give you an opinion on that.

Good luck to you.
