It makes everyone participate in the country's decisions, because everyone's sons and daughters may be placed in harm's way.
WWII had the Greatest Generation because every American had to serve their country. It bound us to one another regardless of class.
We have to stop fighting "Wars" with just a quarter of our population. Either it really is a "War" and deserves the full, unrestrained fury of the American People or it is the misguided adventure of an unthinking Executive that takes the lives of only those unfortunate enough to find themselves in the military at the time.
Want the Iraq nightmare to end...start a draft and it will end tomorrow.

We may be finding out soon...honestly.
But think "Vietnam". Lots of protests, and people moving to Canada. Unless of course, it is a necessary reason, such as WWII.
Of course, just plain old mismanagement of our Armed Forces leading to a draft would cause a heck of a lot of protest. America needs a wake up call anyways. Bring it on!

it allows the military unlimited cannon fodder. Now as many young men and women realize they have a choice whether they wish to die in combat, it's very hard to keep enlistment numbers up.

Well, for one thing, it would create lots of protest marches against this ill-advised war. As long as it's "other people" who have to go to Iraq, people can't get stirred up enough to protest. But if we had a draft...
