You'll likely develop nutritional deficiencies. DO NOT cut out the protein. Your body needs it. If you are definitely considering this, make sure you eat plenty of legumes and other sources of complete proteins.

As a vegetarian, it is more difficult to find foods so as to meet all four food group recommendations. Perhaps consult your doc on this, or at least a nutritionist. Just to be sure you won't be creating health problems in the wake of this decision.

If you are considering becomine a vegetarian only to lose weight, I would consult a doc for better options. You'll crave foods you are used to and I just don't see deprivation as something that can be followed over a long period of time nor as means to lose weight. Losing weight involves life-style changes, not fad dieting.

Depends on what you mean by "etc." If you young, under 30, you would have a good chance of losing weight, I lost weight when I became a vegetarian. But it should be a reasonably healthy diet not high in fat, sweets and junk food--it's possible to not eat meat but still have a very unhealthy diet. Include a lot of fresh vegetables, fruits and grains like rice, wheat, corn, high protein things like beans, peas, peanuts; and a reasonable amount of exercise, you should lose weight. Dairy is good too, but try to avoid large amounts of butter fat.

The part somebody else said about being "likely to develop nutritional deficiencies" isn't true--meat eaters have been saying that for hundreds of years and there is no scientific proof. You can look for research on the Internet, if the results say a vegetarian diet causes nutritional deficiencies, it's a good chance the research was biased--funded by companies that market meat. My mother was a nurse and she nagged me for years about being vegetarian, I came back to her with facts and she eventually saw it my may. I have had blood work several times in my life and I have never had any "nutritional deficiencies."

My wife is a Dietitian in a hospital and the doctors sign off on whatever diet she gives the patients; that's because they know she's good. A competent Dietitian (LD/RD) has more background in nutrition than the average medical doctor.

The above answers are all right--but chances are if you followed the diet you mention you would lose weight because it doesn't include the stuff people get fat on. However, nuts and dried fuit have plenty of calories if you major in them. Just not so much as the fattie foods.
One benefit of a vegetarian diet is it breaks up old habits.
