I don't see why it wouldn't be safe. Is the dog showing signs of aggression of anything? You might need to retrain her when you get her home but from the sounds of it, you taking her back would be the best thing for her.

What is the breed of the dog?
Did she have a lot of contact with people?
Do you intend to put her into training with a professional trainer?

If you introduce her to the kids away from any place she would consider "her territory," You have a better chance at a positive reunion.

Make sure you teach your children what is ok to do to a dog - and what is not ok.

The type of dog matters a LOT. If you have a Labrador, a Chihuahua, a Poodle... etc., it should be fairly ok.
If you have a Chow, Akita, Pit Bull, etc., it may be very dangerous.

I don't let ANYONE near my Chows without caging them first. They will tolerate meeting people when harnessed - but are VERY protective and possessive. They can and have attacked on a dime.

We need more info hon. Peace. --De

Bring her over for a 'play date', see how she goes. I assume she has been around your kids before? Bring her over to your house for an hour a day for a week, then have her overnight a couple of times the next. If that goes well, pick her up permanently the week after. If its not possible to pick her up and drop her off(distance), set up a fenced off area in your yard and in your house that the kids cant get into, and let your kids have a bit of quiet, supervised play time, and you spend as much time with her as possible retraining her and quality time. Slowly reintroduce her to your normal house hold life. As for her diet, slowly reintroduce her when she comes back to live. Because he didnt keep up with her training it will probably make it easier for you to reclaim the alpha dog title.

Have you and your kids had regular contact with your dog? How did your uncle treat your dog? What kind of dog is she? Has she been fed proper? Does she get regular exercise? Are your children good with her. All these thing take part . Get a guide on dog behavior watch the dog whisperer, animal planet Has your dog ever been food deprived? Never let your children mess with a dog when they are eating this will make the dog feel like it has to defend its food, exspecially if they don't get enough to eat. If you give your dog lots of love, food and exercise then ther should be no problems, and teach your kidds to always be gentle and loving, and to never ever hit a dog. Good Luck I have 5 dogs and they are truley my best friends.

first you need to know the breed temperment. is breed one person dog, does breed able to cope with changes in a suitable time frame, can breed cope with children, did uncle punish in a harsh manner for "accidents " as a puppy, You could start the transition from his home to yours as a "babysitting" type style, to see how breed reacts. You never did mention what type breed dog was: size, short or long hair, food used to eating etc. Could contact local vet for further information about your pet's breed

well, what you could do is take her classes so that she will be trained and will be able to listen to you when you tell her something. you can start the diet over again and then continue the training from where your uncle left off.

If she hasn't been abused she will be fine. Just watch your kids. Kids are know to hurt animals, and then the animal is dumped or destroyed because of the kids.

if she hasn't been abused, all dogs are retrainable so it is perfectly safe to bring her home
