when you gauge your ears, can you use pinchers instead of tapers?
or would tapers be a better idea?

Tapers are ideal because they are designed for stretching, and are made of surgical steel (for the most part). A taper set is fairly innexpensive, or most piercing studios will taper for free if you buy the jewelry from them (I charge $5-$10 for stretches if they don't buy my jewelry)

Pinchers are usually made of acrylic and are worn in the ear. Acrylic is not an appropriate material for fresh stretches, because there may be small tears present.

When you stretch be sure to wait at least 6 weeks between stretches (longer when you get to the 2 ga range) to avoid blowouts and other complications. Your lobes will thank you for it

Yes, yes you can. The o rings on them might aggravate your ears though while they're healing though, but they are defiantly easier than some tapers are. you can also put electrical taper on your plugs till you can go up to the next size.

tapers are better. but if you start from about 16g and go up one size at a time and leave about 2 weeks between sizes you probobly won't need to use tapers unitl you get to 8 or 6.

use tapers its less painful. but i done mine by jamming heaps of earings and when i ran out i used padlocks it worked really well. i have both my ears done and my brothers both have theirs done and they used tapers. when i realised i wanted them bigger i used tapers they work so well. make sure that as your pushing them thru that you lubricate them with sumthin lyk vitamin e cream it makes them so much easier to push thru and also when you do push them thru you may get a bit of swelling and the area around the taper may become hard. do not play with it as it will just make the pain worse. and when you are stretching them you will get sum smelly gunky stuff that you may think is just gross. all it is is the dead skin building up in the taper make sure you clean them 3-4 times a week. take them out and soak them in dettol for about five or ten mins otherwise they will get really smelly and trust me the smell is awful. good luck i hope that helped.
