Try to prevent the pain if it's chronic....is it due to bad posture, poor sleeping position, tension from stress? Address these things. I have a job related neck injury and headaches and find sleeping on a japanese style buckwheat pillow really helps. If acute pain, heat can relax the muscles. Some people prefer cold. An anti inflammatory over the counter drug can also help but check with your doctor first to see what is suitable for you

Figure out which makes the pain feel better..... hot or cold, then use either a heating pad or an ice pack with your choice of pain meds like Aleve or Tylenol. If the pain persists see a doctor about muscle relaxers like Skelaxin.
