Maybe you overcooked them and they got burnt but try this recipe.

1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
1/2 cup molasses
2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 to 1 1/2 cups raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, optional

Cream sugar and shortening together in a large mixing bowl. Add egg and molasses; beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients and mix well. Add vanilla then stir in oatmeal and raisins. Stir in nuts, if using. Drop from teaspoon onto greased baking sheet. Bake oatmeal raisin cookies at 375° for 10 to 12 minutes, until done.It makes about 4 dozen oatmeal raisin cookies.

Hope oyu like it!!

What exactly was wrong with them? That will help us tell you what went wrong.

One thing that inexperienced bakers seem to do is to not let the oven heat up all the way before baking. If they are undercooked, this may be why.

It is impossible to comment on what is wrong without more specifics about the appearance/texture/taste of the cookies.

did you use reg or self rising flour? if using plain flour you need to add salt, baking powder and baking soda. trust me this will flub up any good recipe.

Most likely you overcooked them. I have had experience with that sort of thing.
