No one is happy all of the time, but some people feel as if they can never find happiness. Some people feel as if their entire life is devoted to nothing but pain and hurt and loneliness. Every day is a struggle, and every breath a fight for survival. These people have a deep understanding of the word Depression.

Depression is an epidemic in the USA. It is a combination of several things converging: fast food, lack of exercise, believing movies to be real, lack of a real education, allowing the media to dictate culture, pretending that all is alright, all foreign people do not have rights in their own land and are threatening yours.

Briefly - your country is fake, deep down inside you know it, but you do not have the guts to buck the system.

You have one shot at the can - chuck the problems and choose joy!

Your words really struck home. I have suffered from treatment-resistant depression since my mid-teens. It's not a matter of choosing to "get over it" and think positively (although cognitive therapy has certainly helped) -- it's a medical condition that is very difficult to treat, and medications that knock out most other types of depression only work partially, and only for a certain period of time. Then it's a matter of finding another medication combination that gives partial relief, while the black dogs that were never far away to begin with return to sink their teeth fully into my soul.

Why are some people so depressed? Because it's a condition like multiple sclerosis or diabetes, and should be viewed as such. The tragedy is that so few with clinical depression seek treatment because of the stigma in our society associated with mental and emotional illness.

I've had periods of true joy in my life, and I wouldn't trade those for anything. On the whole, I'm glad that I've survived this long. But there are stretches of days at a time where I'm immobilized in bed, knocked out by the medications that dull my mind and heart to prevent me from hurting or killing myself. On those days, life doesn't seem much worth living.

I can't pretend to answer a question that faces all of humanity, but I can take a stab at one of the biggest contributors to depression; the media.

TV feeds a steady diet of fear and hopelessness into the minds and souls of the people of planet Earth. Ever notice how they report bad events, but never give the names of the charitable groups on scene helping? If I wrote the news..."Something bad happened here. These are the people who are responding. If you'd like to help, send a donation to..."

But that's not the way it's done. Why is no good news reported? Heard about the 100 bad Catholic priests? What about the other hundreds of thousands? What are they doing? I bet it's a world of good!

Heard about the corrupt politician? What about all of the good ones doing good for their people?

The USA is the largest contributor to disaster relief. How about some stories about that?

No, that is not their purpose.

I sometimes think the media is the single largest destructive force on the planet. I meet more people who are angry or depressed about something they saw on TV which doesn't affect them, than I do about anything else.

Maybe THAT is why so many people are depressed?

I believe many people are depressed in America today because everyone does not have a stress free life.

Everyone encounters problems within their family, work, money, health, and love.

Within each factor you encounter so many issues that I believe it is very hard to see a day to be happy when the next day that happiness is not promised.

That is how I truly feel.

I think the word is too overused. Look at how many people call themselves 'depressed'. They go to their doctors and get the special medicine and the fancy label but they don't really know what Bipolar or anorexia are all about. For some reason it's 'cool' to be depressed, it's just an excuse for indecision or personal weakness.

check how many people are gonna go oh mommy never loved me, I'm all depressed, it's the depression. it just gets used for fashionable terms. If you're truly depressed, you don't even accept that you are or come to terms with it, because it's a bullet hole through your personality.

Some people do but other people just use the word but go about their lives quite happily. Truly depressed people don't find 'closure' or any hip term. It drives me crazy seeing how many emotional teenagers or useless people call themselves depressed. They could never wish to understand it. They just get a doctor that gives them a label, but no-one telling them to stand up for themselves.

Yeah, that's my rant... psychiatric hospitals are not fun...

Because your question seems to ignore all grammatical rules of the English language.

There are two possible reasons for depression: either a) the person in question just focuses on the wrong parts of life (the more depressing ones, obviously, like pain), or b) their serotonin (sorry if my spelling's atrocious; I'm recalling this from an informative essay I wrote on depression in the eighth grade) levels in the person's brain, causing depressive thoughts chemically. (Of course, it can also be both.)

There could be several reasons. .

One: They like the attention. They like ACTING depressed for the sympathy that others give them. It makes them feel important because they are getting attention.

Two: They don't see a point in trying to be happy. Maybe they take the standpoint "well i'm gunna die anywayz. .so what's the point in trying"

Three: They don't look at the positive things in ANY situation. Every situation ( YES EVERY ) has a positive and a negative side. Maybe they just look at the bad parts of things and don't or don't want to realize the good in things.

You don't really know until you ask them. Maybe you can help them and give them a little happiness. Happiness can be hard to find sometimes but its always there.

If anyone is depressed for any long length of time they should seek counseling of some sort. I think everyone knows how depression feels. That's a human experience we all share. It's whether or not you dwell in the depression when it becomes a problem. Usually chronic depression is caused by a chemical imbalance and can be treated effectively with medication and counseling.

because most people have to work everyday and endure a usually unbearable boss who is against human race. Waking up at 7 or 8 just to take an underground filled with people in the same situation.

Depression can be caused by two things. Either a physical/chemical imbalance in the body or the lack of a reason to exist that comes from not having God at their side.
