I was planning on getting a small dog, because I really love small breed dogs. I live in a single type home with a medium yard. I am home most of the day and I work in the late evenings. I want a dog thats playful, not a lot of work to groom( brush and combing, a bath once a week), easy to exercise, maybe a walk twice a day or something like that. I don't want a real snappish dog, because I have relatives that have small children over my house. Also a breed that will get along well with my former terrier mix. Not a yappy breed either, just calm, happy-go-lucky type of breed!

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you!

How about a Dachshund? (short haired)

I just got one 2 weeks ago and she is just amazing! I have lots of kids around my neighbor hood and she just loves them to death! Very happy go lucky. And she gets along with my 6 year old, cranky Pekingnese.

My friend has 3 and they are just so cute! Very well behaved. They get a walk twice a day and a brushing once a week and a bath about once a month. Also very happy go lucky!

Any breed should get along with your terrier mix if you have already established your role as leader to your dog, and to your new puppy!
There are many many many toy and small breeds out there. The first breed that comes to mind after reading your criteria is a miniature bull terrier, but I'm biased, I'm a bully breed lover!
Good luck!

P.S. The test on the Purina website might be helpful, and its pretty fun to do!

A rescue dog!

This website is connected to the animal rescue shelters near you. http://www.petfinder.com/

Type in you zip code and go through the breed list. I am fond of beagles and pugs myself. All animals are different, and the shelters type in the specific dog's personality, which is more important than the breeds personality.

Dogs you buy in pet stores and from puppy mills are over-bred, and then they are killed when they become too old to be cute... or they are used as breeder dogs and are forced to constantly be pregnant. There are so many dogs who need homes.

Many shelters will also let you see how well you dog interacts with a potential rescue dog.

We have a miniature pinscher. She's great. Not too yappy which is unusual for a small dog, because it seems like they all are. They are good with kids and other dogs. We also have a large Doberman. They get along great. Full grown the miniature is 9 pounds.

A Maltese is a wonderful dog. Very smart. Affectionate. Good protector of the household. Keep the hair short (puppy cut) and you won't have to worry about bathing and brushing her/him too often. They can weigh between 6-9 pounds. A great small lap dog.

Get a shar-pei. They come in toy, mini and standard sizes. I currently have a mini and a standard. My mini is about 30-35 lbs and stands 17"s at the shoulder. They're excellent family dogs, good with cats if raised around them and they are good watch dogs that aren't overly aggressive. They're a very laid back breed. Plus every one loves the wrinkley dogs when you're out walking them and they're not your everyday average dog.

The only thing you need to remember about small breeds is that although they are small, cute and compact; they come with a whole list of health problems. Also, they are VERY fragile and if you have young children over your house, I do not recommend getting a small dog. If you do decide on a small dog, you can not let the children pick the dog up - ever. If the dog falls, it could die or it may injure itself, needing surgery.

A few small/medium sized dogs you may want to consider:

Why not look into a nice mix-breed puppy? Look for the mix to be part lab as that breed is friendly and playful. They don't tend to be agressive.

Try the "Breed Selector" on Purina.com. It will ask you a bunch of questions about what you are looking for and then it will formulate a list of the breeds that best match what you are looking for.
