Oliver Wendel Holmes was on a train when he was confronted by a preacher. The preacher asked him : 'Are you Oliver Wendel Holmes, the abolitionist ?' Holmes replied, 'Yes, sir. I am.' The preacher then said: 'Why don't you go to Alabama.' (Apparently because slavery was practised there.) Holmes replied, ' Are you a preacher and are you supposed to be saving souls?'
