You'll need an instructor to sign you off prior to your test. Here are some sites with additional information on getting your private pilots license:

You're required to have a logbook endorsement from a CFI who certifies that you have been given the proper ground instruction to take the written test. Here is an example of the endorsement:

Aeronautical Knowledge Test: §§ 61.35(a )(1), 61.103(d), and 61.105
I certify that (First name, MI, Last name) has received the required training of § 61.105. I have determined he/she is prepared for the (category and class) knowledge test.

So, no you can't take the written without ground instruction. However, if you have an unscrupulous instructor who doesn't care about his/her license, then technically they could give you the endorsement without giving the instruction. It's totally not worth it to try that route though.

Why would you want to? As a pilot I wouldn't recommend taking any short cuts. Go to a ground school and study the subjects as they are taught. You are going to have questions that the instuctor will be able to explain to you. Good luck...

No, you need a Flight Instructor endorsement before you can take the test, so you need to be attending flight training one way or the other.
