Paris Hilton.

Chihuahuas are the current "dog" right now. The same thing has happened with Dalmations (thanks to 101 Dalmations), Pugs (Men in Black) and so on. They are influenced by what's popular on tv, in the movies, what celebrities have.... People see them, think they are cute and don't research the breed or even prepare themselves for the commitment of what it's like to raise them. Which results in several of them being surrendered. I was impressed by the director of "In Her Shoes" because he recognized this as an issue. Rather than use a purebred pug (which the script called for) he made the intentional choice to use a mixed breed dog.

In the southern US states, particularly Texas but all through the south Chihuahuas are real common.Puppies go for very little and are bred by lots of people. In the Northern states there aren't many Chihuahuas in rescues. And not strangely the quality I've seen through Northern states has been more of the Apple headed show type. While I have seen a larger percentage of dear type non showy Chis through the south. Years ago when C-sections were more difficult show breeders did keep some deer headed dogs, but that is not so common among show people today. So I would say that Mexico has a lot to do with what you may be seeing in the south. In that the Chi is more of a common site in states closer to Mexico. There really are rather rare to see up North, and shelters are not filled with them North of NY

Small dogs are easier to rehome but walk into any shelter and most of the dogs are medium to large size. Cross breed and mutts are the most prevalent dog in need of rescue. Medium to large breeds are also the most likely to be found starving, chained up in a yard with no shelter too. Larger more nastier reputation dogs such as Rotts, Pits, Mastif crosses and Dobe crosses are rife in shelters. I am not trying to downplay the needs of smaller breeds i am just trying to make you aware that there are many dogs in need of rescue not just chihuahuas. If you cant rescue a dog directly, donating some money or volunteering at a shelter is the next best thing. It doesnt matter what you give but anything is better than just whinging about the state of affairs in the shelters.

Chihuahuas seem to be a fad pet around here. They are popular. Since there are more chihuahuas around than most other breeds, there are a higher percentage of them around in shelters and rescues, too.

Chihuahuas are also breakable. I've seen more than a few surrendered because they required surgery for a broken leg and the owners couldn't afford it.

Chihuahuas are in high demand. So I think they are being over bred right now. They should be very sweet and loving little dogs but right now some are having real temperament problems.
Also people aren't training them and they become a nuisance dog instead of a loving dog.
They get rid of them without so much as a second look.

Sad isn't it.

Because so many people think that they should be like Paris Hilton, and they forget that a chihuahua is not actually an accessory! So when their chihuahua actually grows up and isn't as cute anymore, than they think it is ok to give it away.

Because so many people don't bother to research to which breed they are going to get. Chihuahuas are cute, small and all the celebrities have them so people just go out and buy them . But as it turns our chihuahuas are not the breed for everyone.

they are small fragile dogs that get sickly. most not breed for health only for money. There are a few healthy one's but you still have to be careful. The smaller the dog the more problems you are likely to encounter. Just as the larger the dog the more likely to encounter problems. With hips and joints.

Not just Chihuahuas, all dogs. Visit your local shelter, walk the streets.

Many times they are brought to shelters in the U.S. from Mexico. Rescue organizations go there and bring them back because of the cruel method used to euthanize dogs in Mexico. Unlike the U.S. where they are given an injection or lethal gases. In Mexico electrocution is the method used to kill unwanted dogs.
