pictograph

In graph theory, a pictograph is a graph that shows numerical information by using picture symbols or icons to represent data sets. The advantage of using a pictograph is that it is easy to read.

A symbol that looks like what it represents. For example, think of the "emergency exit" sign - it has a little person running through a door with flames behind him. That's a pictograph. As is the little picture of the guy throwing his wrapper in a trash can on chewing gum wrappers, or the signs that have a little plane on them and mean "airport".

The disadvantage is that they can only communicate small amounts of specific information, but the advantage is that anyone can understand them.

An counterexample would be the red cross you see on hospitals and clinics - it doesn't LOOK like a medical doctor, we just know what it means because we've learned it at some point in our lives.

Hope this helps. :)

A pictograph is a picture representing a word or an idea, a hieroglyph (or a record in hieroglyphic symbols), or it's a graphic character used in picture writing.
