Some traditions during the greek orthodox mourning period may include: covering mirrors in the home to concentrate on mourning and not on vanity; burning a special memorial candle for seven days in memory of the deceased; immediate members of the family sitting on small chairs or boxes; wearing a black ribbon that has been cut and slippers or just socks rather than shoes; and, for men, not shaving. All these symbolise the mourners' lack of interest in their comfort or how they appear to others.

the countless previous classic conduct approximately mourning are waved away, yet Greeks being regularly sentimental human beings attempt to maintain custom as much as obtainable . because it rather is been stated, significant is the relationship to the deceased and the age of similar. needless to say, to agonize approximately it appears like it replaced into somebody close. for this reason if marriage is decrease than particular situations, e.g, being pregnant, you may proceed with it yet circumvent each and all the festivities that are accompanying it. If on the different hand that's postponed for no less than, as long far off from the death, that's going to be an act of admire of the deceased's memory.

Extreme mourning is nearly a thing of the past.

I have aunts who wear black for 1 year following the passing of any family member. These aunts also do not attend parties or host any party and generally do not leave the city. These habits are traditional and serve to respect the memory of the deceased. I have never heard of not shaving.

When the 1 year period of mourning passes, the aunts resume normal dress, party and social function attendance and travel outside their city (if applicable). I have one aunt whose husband died in 1989 and she has worn the black ever since but she continues to attend social functions and leave town. Like I mentioned in the first sentence, she is more of a rarity when it comes to extreme mourning.

A 40 day period of mourning is typical in the Orthodox faith. One does not have to wear black or engage in the superstitious actions mentioned in the body of the question.
