We recently got a new cat (he is a little over a year old.) The previous owner let him jump on the counters. I am trying to break him of it as he makes a mess (knocks things over, leaves cat hair on everything) every time he does.

I am currently using a spray bottle (water) and spraying him while saying "no" every time I catch him. He hates the water and goes running....but it doesn't keep him off the counters when I am not home to spray him.

Any suggestions?

Try cleaning your counters with a stong citrus scented cleaner like orange-glo. Cats hate the smell of citrus. You may have to clean your counters everyday at first (to keep the citrus smell strong). After awhile; your cat will learn to stay away.

Apply Sticky Tape to the Edge. Cats hate the feeling of sticky tape, and will be discouraged after one or two tries. The disadvantage is that you may have to keep reapplying it indefinitely, and the sticky stuff may be difficult to clean up afterward.
Tape a Strip of Aluminum Foil. It's not only the feel of it on their toes, but the noise that deters cats.
The Pennies in a Can Trick. This is an old tried-and-true means of deterring cats from many forms of undesirable behavior. Drop a few pennies (or pebbles) in an empty aluminum can and tape the opening. When you see your cat start to jump on the counter, shake the can loudly. The problem here is that he'll learn it's okay to jump when you're not around.

Kudos to the inventors of SssCat ! - http://www.ssscat.com/repellent/index.html
I no longer have the need to stake out with a spray bottle awaiting for your cat to be naughty :) My 5 indoor only cats love to feast on the flower arrangement on my counter, I could never have flower arrangement in the house! It always ended up being chewed on (then the cat vomit!) or the vase will end up broken on the floor. Not anymore, thanks to SssCat.
Motion detector spots your cat
Humane, ozone-friendly spray deters your cat's bad behavior
Can also be used on other small animals, such as rabbits, dogs, and ferrets
Stop your cat from scratching the furniture or going into off-limits areas that you designate. You can't be home to watch your pet at all times, so the SSSCAT™ automated cat deterrent is a humane way to deter bad behavior. Your cat's movement will activate the motion sensor, triggering the humane spray to be released.

Well, if your cat is heavy, I'd suggest putting bubble wrap on the spot he keeps jumping up on (or if he doesn't have a certain spot, just move it around once in a while), it'll really startle him when he hears the pop! Now, if your cat isn't heavy, or doesn't scare easy ect. I'd suggest getting the Scat Mat. Here is some info on it: http://www.contech-inc.com/products/scatmat/.

It is humane, but if your REALLY worried about that, just put it on low or medium. I will admit high is a bit of an shock....

Cats don't usually respond to punishment as much as they respond to praise. Continue with the water bottle when he gets on the counter, but also praise him when he is sitting somewhere you want him to (the couch, his bed etc.) Kind words in a nice tone, a treat or extra petting may do the trick.

GOOOOD LUCK!!!!!! I have 2 (8mth old) cats that do the same thing. I tried the spray bottle, the foil, the bubble wrap(which by the way my cats love to chew and pop them) nothing works. My 1 cat is smarter, he hears me walking to the kitchen I hear him jump down. But the other cat (we say he's mentally challenged lol!) He will stand there looking at me. I will yell NO! get down! and he just looks. I point to the floor and say ,DOWN! and he looks down and looks at me like, Duuuuuu! ha! then I will put him down and say down as I'm doing it. But it isn't working so far. Hope you have better luck!

The new electronic vibration alarms work effectively for keeping cats off of counters and cars. In each of these instances, you do not need to be nearby for the learning to occur
