If The Holy Spirit gives other gifts then why does the "baptism" have to be confirmed by the evidence of other tongues? Why not some other gift?

1 Cor 14:13 Therefore let the one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may translate. 14 For if I am praying in a tongue, it is my [gift of the] spirit that is praying, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What is to be done, then? I will pray with the [gift of the] spirit, but I will also pray with [my] mind. I will sing praise with the [gift of the] spirit, but I will also sing praise with [my] mind. 16 Otherwise, if you offer praise with a [gift of the] spirit, how will the man occupying the seat of the ordinary person say “Amen” to your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 True, you give thanks in a fine way, but the other man is not being built up. 18 I thank God, I speak in more tongues than all of YOU do. 19 Nevertheless, in a congregation I would rather speak five words with my mind, that I might also instruct others orally, than ten thousand words in a tongue

There are a variety of gifts , all are meant to build up the body of Christ. You have to remember that :"you must want love more than anything else;but still hope for the spiritual gifts as well. " ICor14vs.1 Everybody is given different gifts so you really couldn't confirm the baptism by tongues alone. I think if anything you can confirm the baptism if you witness any of the gifts of the Holy Spirit as well as any of the fruits of the Holy Spirit such as peace , joy. But above all if love isn't present then the gifts are wasted, we are as St. Paul says just cymbals clashing.

Tongues as the initial outward sign of Spirit baptism is an inspired utterance wher the spirit of the believer and the Holy Spirit join in praise or prophesy. However, ther must also be lifestyle signs that the baptism is real such as an increase in the love of fellow man, a deepening love for the things of God etc
So, I think that to answer your question- it has to do with praising God WITH the Holy Spirit

Evidence can be confirmed with other gifts, Hebrews says that God bears witness to our witness through signs, wonders, miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Tongues is used because it is the least of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and most common.

Why do you need confirmation - some outside proof?

There are many other gifts - most are subtle and many people would perfer tongues. That marks them out - makes them special.

And no - there are no scriptures supporting this view - that tongues is the only way to confirm the presence of the HS. In fact, Paul forbids the use of tongues unless there is someone there to translate it. That alone shows that there are two gifts right there that can confirm the HS.

Read the writings of Paul. This topic is spread throughout them.

you're complicated 2 distinctive issues right here.there is the preliminary baptism interior the Holy Spirit the place you obtain your prayer language and with this you are able to pray in tongues any time you desire. In 1st Corinthians 12,it describes the manifestation of the presents of the Spirit.one among them is a message in tongues and the subsequent one after that's the translation of that comparable message.those are 2 distinctive operations of the Holy Spirit.all and sundry who gets the baptism interior the Holy Spirit must be waiting to speak in different tongues.

Doesn't John say that if you don't have love for the bretheren the spirit of Christ does not dwell in you? I would say that the initial evidence of baptism of the Holy Spirit is love. And Paul says the best gift to desire earnestly is love. I see no scriptural basis for this belief, as a matter of fact, it seems to me that this has a tendancy to lead to "spiritual arrogance".

Because the gifts are special for special times..when God wants....sometimes God doesnt want someone to be healed. Speaking in tongues is proof of a real beliver. we can act, look like it , but through tongues we can actually confess to God. More important to communicate with him....that is direct communication...the gifts are too help others...after you talk and have him =]

and Acts 2:38 "repent and be baptised everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall recieve the GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT"

"And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity:so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell" James 3:6
"For everykind of beast and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the seas, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poisen." James 7-8

through the tongue we can hurt people, its a very powerful weapon. But if you make it speak good then...well its a marvoulous gift.....
